Soccer positions

Welcome to Coaching soccer positions e-book!

The first question I get from new or beginning coaches, " I have have not played very much or not at all, how do soccer positions work?"

How do I get the kids to hold and play their positions?

Soccer is very different from other sports as the players are obviously using their feet for the most part. When most kids begin to play they are uncomfortable with the soccer ball, so they play with their head down.

They watch the soccer ball when they dribble, so they can't see what is going on around them.

This requires young players to become comfortable with the soccer ball, so they can lift their heads up and identify passing options or opportunities to dribble. This helps the kids start to develop a skill level where positions can be introduced.

Positions are not very helpful when the skill level is low and the game looks like pin ball, with the ball bouncing all over the place and players running in groups trying to win the soccer ball.

The parents and coach scream spread out, kick it or a myriad of other things trying to get the kids to play as a team, but to no avail!

Here are a few more situations you might run into...

  1. You have just begun coaching your kids local soccer team.
  2. You have coached and played before, but want more education on the youth game.
  3. You have never played or coached and need help with the basic positions.
  4. You have kids moving from 4 Vs 4 to 6 Vs 6 or 6 Vs 6 to 8Vs 8 and want to make the jump smoothly.

I am not going into coaching age specific exercises or a lot on skill development, but I have included the basics and some references for you on these topics for you to further explore if you wish.

I will focus on positions, and what we call team shape.

About me

My name is Chris Brown and I have been coaching youth soccer for 20 years. I currently hold a USSF "B" license and a National Youth License through the United States Soccer Federation. I have coached recreational, academy and select soccer players here in Texas.

The most fun I have had and have is coaching younger players in the game of soccer. The kids are like little sponges picking up all the soccer skills and learning to play in the small sided games.

A coaches biggest challenge in the US in my opinion is a limited amount of soccer practices where the coach must teach the kids how to control the soccer ball, dribble, pass, shoot, teach positions and make it fun at the same time. You might be working with limited space or no goals? So, the challenge is to be creative!

We as a nation are developing more of a soccer culture and I would like to see it continue to grow. This is your challenge as a coach!! If you are from a traditional soccer nation the kids will grow up watching and playing the game and probably play outside of the training you provide. This is ideal because they will master many of the basics and learn the nuances the game.

If you don't have kids that play all the time then the coach must motivate and teach the kids to play away from soccer practice. The more the players touch the soccer ball the better they become, but this is a conversation for another time.

Lets get down to what you will learn in the e-book!

Here is what you will learn through the Soccer Positions e-book...

  1. A brief introduction into soccer skills.
  2. Why small sided game are so important and help positions?
  3. Learn what the difference is between shape and positions and how they help each other.
  4. How the positions work for different formations like 3 Vs 3, 4 Vs 4, 6 Vs 6 and 8 Vs 8.
  5. I have included diagrams to give you ideas on how the positions work.

I have included some references that link to my site to give you more examples if something is not clear. A coaches goal should be to foster a love for the game by making the soccer practices fun and dynamic.
