"How do coaches make soccer fun so kids enjoy coming to soccer practice?"

The keys to introducing soccer fun...

Coaching is an ever expanding topic and just when you think you have learned it all someone comes along with another neat way to entertain the kids.

These are some of the topics I feel that coaches need to become proficient in when teaching the kids.

  • Knowing how to teach soccer skills to players.
  • Providing challenges with soccer skills juggling, dribbling, ball control.
  • Introducing soccer fun games that are soccer related helps the kids have fun and improve.
  • Playing concentration games to get the kids to focus before soccer games , during practice, and at the end of soccer practice.

The coach can turn the entire soccer practice into one big soccer fun game with spurts of skills training and small sided games.

What soccer skills should be introduced to young kid soccer players?

Teaching soccer skills can be fun if the coach approaches it the right way.

If a coach has not played soccer before the best way to show kids the soccer skills to the players is to have someone come out and demo the skills.

Use an older select level player or a college player.

Here are some of the basic skills that young players must learn learn and when combine with small sided games below kids can learn very quickly...

Here are some of the basic skills that young players must learn and when combine with small sided games below kids can learn very quickly...

  • How do coaches help young players become effective dribblers? Through Dribbling basics!
  • Get tips and techniques on how to hit a good, solid push pass with accuracy.
  • How to improve ball control using the foot, thigh and chest.
  • What is the point of learning how to juggle the soccer ball?

Last but not least what tips and techniques can coaches use to help kids become better at striking the soccer ball?

What fun soccer games can you use to teach soccer and make it fun?

Games for the U6 - U8 player that are fun for this age group with lots of learning opportunities.

Coaching U9 and U10 kids will be ready for some different games if the kids have been playing through U6 and U8 age groups.

The coach must judge what level the players are playing at no matter what age group setting up soccer practice accordingly.

How do we get the kids focused during practice?

What are concentration games and how do they add to the soccer fun? Players have to learn discipline, learn how to focus on what the coach is saying as well as learning to concentrate. This can be taught so the kids learn to focus in a fun way.

These are just a few games that are very effective in getting young players to concentrate during a soccer practice. I even use them during warm ups.

Setting up soccer practice

How does a coach apply the soccer fun games to a soccer practice? The coach has to decide on a topic and then decide how to design the soccer practice. Here is an example of soccer practice plans that coaches can use to design practices so kids have fun at soccer practice.

Age group: U4 -U8

  • warm up - tag game - no ball
  • Basic dribbling - working on all four parts of the foot so players become more confident with the soccer ball.
  • Water break - kids can be slow getting back from a water break so I use this little trick - Last one back does 20 push ups.
  • Fun game - Crabs and fishes - can play several rounds
  • Small sided game - 1v1 or 2v2
  • Clapping game

 Age group: U8 - U10

  • Warm up: tag game.
  • Technique: Work on passing the soccer ball.
  • Play Opposed passing.
  • Water break.
  • Small sided games.
  • Clapping game.

This is an example of a soccer practices where kids will learn, get touches on the soccer ball and have fun.
