How to use a juggling game to
motivate young soccer players.

Teach your kids juggling games so they learn how to take juggling to the next level. What is the easiest way to explain and show the kids how to get over the juggling hump?

Video games!

Kids love trying to advance up the levels of a video game and juggling is very similar - I like to give them goals to beat. This is a great way to start motivating the players to try and take it to the next level. Need more instruction on basic juggling? click here!

Four minute juggle off...

The kids have a lot of fun with the juggling test like the four minute juggle off. The whole idea is to get the kids comfortable on the soccer ball - they only become comfortable with the soccer ball with lots of good touches.

Rules: It is a very simple juggling game. The player will juggle with a surface that the coach determines - counting the number of juggles - when the ball hits the ground they can pick the ball up and keep the count going.

Scoring: The players must add each game together - foot - thigh - head - to get a total score.

Example: When the payer finishes juggling with the feet and moves onto the thighs the kids add the thigh juggles to the feet.

Juggling with the feet

To get the game going...

  • The players juggle with their feet only for a minute.
  • When the ball hits the ground the player can pick the ball up and keep the count going.

Encourage the players to use good technique when they are using their feet to juggle the soccer ball - toe out - ankle locked so the ball hits the sweet spot.

Their feet are the tougher surface because the surface is smaller.

Juggling game with the thighs

To get the game going...

  • The players will juggle on their thighs for a minute.
  • The same rules apply if the ball hits the ground the players will pick up and keep the count going.
  • The players will add what they have done with the feet and thighs together.

Good technique with the thigh is hitting the soccer ball right on the thigh and not the knee - the knee will cause the ball to bounce away.

Juggling game with the head

To start the game...

  • The players juggle with their head now and see how many they can do.
  • Good technique is knees bent slightly, mouth closed and eyes open...the ball must hit the forehead and not the top of the head.

The kids struggle when they lean to far forward or to far back. They need to position themselves in the middle.

Combination juggling

The players can juggle with anything they want foot, thigh or head in this final juggling game.

Coaching tip: It can be quite easy for some players to embellish a little but the coach will be able to tell who has been genuine with the players that can get good numbers when juggling.

Bring the score in...

I now have the kids come in and give me their scores so we can measure where the players are at this particular time.

I will play the 4 minute juggle off every couple of weeks to see where the players have improved.

We will work on juggling between games to reinforce what we have worked built.

Enjoy your coaching!
